Weed Harvester Committee · Meeting of July 21, 2026
Groton's Weed Harvester Committee voted 3-0 to hire mechanic Joe Conway and capped maintenance spending at $7,000 to get the machine running by August 1. Chair James Luening, Keith Downer and Steve Beard approved both motions by roll call; harvester operator Zoltan Kamaris, who cannot vote due to a conflict of interest, vouched for Conway, saying "it's not somebody I just met on the street corner where I hang out." Guest Larry Hurley flagged a possible cylinder issue behind the machine's power loss, calling it "probably the cause of all your problems." Members estimated two major hydraulic hoses could cost $500 each to replace, on top of hydraulic fluid, filters and an ignition-switch fix. The committee is still seeking a second seasonal worker for weed disposal this summer.
