GROTON — The Groton Conservation Commission heard a detailed briefing on a specialized stretch energy code heading to spring 2026 Town Meeting and continued a contested garage-in-buffer hearing. Sustainability Commission presenters said adopting the code could make Groton eligible for up to $1 million in state decarbonization grants and save an all-electric homeowner about $1,300 a year, while GELD's commissioners voted 2-1 to back it. Member Olin Lathrop said "I used to spend about $2,000 a year on oil" before switching to heat pumps.
Clerk Kimberly Kuliesis countered that electricity costs "could potentially skyrocket" for low-income residents. Separately, the board continued a notice of intent for a garage addition at 26 Indian Hill Road to February 10, with Lathrop saying the project is "the kind of structure that the bylaw ... is really intended to prevent" absent stronger, permanent mitigation.
