Stewardship Committee To Consult Biologist On Meadow
Groton's Stewardship Committee weighed letting oak forest reclaim Ames Meadow instead of continuing a mowing regime now in its sixth year.
Stewardship Committee · Meeting of July 15, 2026
Groton's Stewardship Committee weighed letting oak forest reclaim Ames Meadow instead of continuing a mowing regime now in its sixth year. Committee member Olin said photos from a recent site walk showed naturally sprouting oaks across the meadow's interior with invasive bittersweet mostly confined to the edges, and said he would consult state Natural Heritage contact Nick Walko before recommending a direction. Member Anna argued the land "has been agriculture" and should keep that use; member Charlotte said losing the oaks "would kind of suck" but worried about scarce open-meadow habitat.
Separately, Olin reported an unidentified party mowed down an unfinished invasive knotweed treatment area at Carol Wheeler Park: "We don't know who. DPW claims it wasn't them." Member Kim, who also sits on the Conservation Commission, said relocating work demands may force her off the Stewardship Committee.
