GROTON — The Groton-Dunstable Regional School Committee opened a hearing on a $54,187,751 fiscal 2027 budget that could force cuts of up to 10 staff positions. A district finance staffer, Sherry, said the budget assumes $150 per student in Chapter 70 state aid, but the governor proposed $75, leaving the district "behind the eight ball." Under the toughest of three scenarios, the district would cut $1.2 million and raise assessments 4.32 percent for Groton and 4.9 percent for Dunstable; the superintendent's full budget would need 8.4 percent and 8.9 percent increases instead. A parent, Rebecca, told the sparsely attended hearing "there is literally five people here, which is embarrassing and gross." The committee also approved a 13-student DECA trip and a $2,670,936.44 warrant on a 7-0 roll call vote.
The budget must be certified by March 11.
