Sewer panel delays historical society abatement call

Sewer Commission · Meeting of April 29, 2026

GROTON — The Groton Sewer Commission continued without resolution a sewer abatement request from the Groton Historical Society, citing unexplained nightly water bursts. Business Manager Lauren Prury said a newly installed Badger meter found roughly 250 to 300 gallons used most nights around midnight, with no leaks identified yet; the society was billed for 87 units on its April 1 bill. Historical society representatives Richard Chilka and Michelle Collette said they have begun shutting off fixtures one by one to isolate the problem.

A lowest-tier abatement, if granted, would cut an estimated "$880 or $890" from the bill, commissioners said. Separately, Chair James Gemeinder said a company called Whispering Sage Home LLC is exploring a 16-bed assisted living facility at 797 Boston Road that would likely need a town meeting vote to extend sewer service. The commission approved minutes from two prior meetings unanimously and set its next meeting for May 13.
